Working as a cook on a merchant ship, a woman comes to know and love Samsa, a woman who gives her the nickname “Boulder.” When Samsa gets a job in Reykjavik and the couple decides to move there together, Samsa expresses her desire to have a child. She is already forty and doesn’t want to miss out on the opportunity. Boulder is a bit hesitant, but finds herself agreeing to the idea, unsure of how to say no. This decision leads them on a journey that feels challenging and unfamiliar.

As motherhood changes Samsa, Boulder must figure out where her priorities lie and whether her longing for independence can outweigh her longing for love.

Eva Baltasar once again showcases her talent for capturing queer voices navigating a difficult world, with prose that is both delicate and captivating, like an ancient saga.
