As a child, Sarafina El-Badry Nance spent nearly every evening with her father looking up at the twinkling stars and wondering about the mysteries of the night sky. With an American father and Egyptian mother who encouraged her academic achievements, Sarafina dreamed of becoming an astronomer to unlock the secrets of the stars above. However, she soon encountered the discouraging notion that girls were not suited for math and science.

In her book, Starstruck, Sarafina takes us on a journey through the cosmos with engaging science lessons at the start of each chapter. She also shares the challenges she faced on Earth – such as sexism, racism, abuse, anxiety, and health struggles – as she pursued her passion for space from UT Austin to UC Berkeley and even a Mars astronaut simulation in Hawai’i. Through it all, Sarafina learned to navigate a field that often lacked inclusivity for women, particularly women of color.
